The YUNOMI story begins with this fact: 97% of tea produced in Japan, stays in Japan. The $1 billion tea industry here, with the exception of a few major players, is made up of thousands of small tea businesses (factories, wholesalers, and shops) and tens of thousands of tea farmers (29,000 according the Japanese government). This situation, combined with a language barrier and lack of technical skills, explains why it is so difficult to obtain variety and quality from the Japanese tea market for buyers outside of Japan.
We make it easy for tea connoisseurs around the world to reach small, artisan businesses in the Japanese tea industry. From family-owned tea farms to artisan teaware studios, tiny tea processors, and historical tea shops, we help by handling localization, promotion, export regulations and shipping. By listing these businesses and their products onto YUNOMI, we create a gateway into the world of Japanese tea.

We want to make sure there is a place to easily find the small-scale producers and businesses that make up so much of the tea industry in Japan. Just like that other online marketplace named after a river, you’ll be able to find anything from the Japanese tea industry on YUNOMI.
As a marketplace, we’re searching out exotic new teas and tisanes from the Land of the Rising Sun, and will surprise you with random discounts on the various cool stuff we find. It’s an adventure, a journey of discovery…a YUNOMI experience!
